Brazeau County set to vote

Residents of Brazeau County head to the polls on Monday to elect a new reeve for the municipality.

Four candidates have put their name forward for the position, which became vacant after Reeve Bart Guyon stepped down unexpectedly in late July.

Those running include former councillors Anthony Heinrich, who sat on council for 27 years and was reeve in the early 2000s, and Pat Vos  who was elected reeve in 2013 and stepped down a year later. They are joined on the ballot by Christie Callaghan, a relative newcomer with a background in journalism and corporate leadership, and Jason Lavigne, who represented the People’s Party of Canada in the last federal election.

While he or she only has one vote when it comes to decision making, the role of the reeve is to serve as the County’s Chief Elected Official. In that capacity the reeve presides over council meetings, acts as lead spokesperson for the municipality and takes the lead in working with other levels of government.

Eligible voters must vote in the division where they live.

Division 1 Easyford Community Hall

Division 2 Violet Grove Community Hall

Division 3  Brazeau County Administration Office

Division 4  Whitby Community Hall

Division 5  Lindale Community Hall

Division 6  Buck Creek Hall Community Hall

Polls are open from 10 am to 8 pm. Detailed information for voters is available on the Brazeau County website.

The new reeve will serve for the balance of this council term, which ends in October of 2029.
