Opportunity for young artists

The Metis Multicultural Youth Society is giving young artists in the community the opportunity to design their logo and maybe win some cash.

Mike Schoenthal, the president of the MMYS, says after the group’s recent AGM, they decided they needed a logo. He says when they considered hiring someone to create the logo they ultimately decided against it.

“[We said] all of our programming is for youth, so why don’t we get the youth to do it for us,” says Schoenthal.

The MMYS is known in the community for its support of those in need. Their main source of funding is the Ph To Kwe campground, which is open during the summer months. This money is then invested into the community through donations and help with local youth events.

Previously known as the Metis Youth Camp, the MMYS adopted their current name around 20 years ago. The group decided to change the name to be more inclusive of other youth in the community.

Because of that broader scope, anyone from the age of eight to 18 can participate in the contest. Schoenthal says the MMYS is open to all youth in the community, so they’ve sent the information to the schools as well.

There are four things that must be included in the logo: the letters MMYS, aspects of Metis culture, youth and multiculturalism, and they want the logo to be simple. There is only one submission per entrant.

To sweeten the pot, the MMYS has put together prizes for the designers. The person who designs the logo they plan to use will receive $250. The runners up, in second and third place, will receive $100 and $50 respectively.

The deadline for the contest is January 31, 2023, so kids have time to work on their concepts over the holidays. The winners will be chosen by the board in the first week of February. The logo will be featured on the MMYS social media feeds.

Anyone who would like to participate in the contest can email their submissions to mmyscontest@gmail.com.
