Midway returning to Drayton

After a couple of years with no fair in town, the Lions Club was able to book the midway again this year.

In the past, the midway was held in early June, but this year it will be held on the last weekend of the month,  from June 23-26. Dylan Fulks, the president of the Lions Club, says that while the date is different, there are a lot of other activities going on that it can tie into.

With school letting out on the 24th and the Community Foundation’s street party taking place on that same Friday, Fulks feels like there will be a good turn out at the midway.

Date change rounds out a community weekend

“There’s a few things happening that same weekend,” says Fulks.

Fulks says the date change wasn’t intentional. He says the Wild Rose Shows has communities on a rotation for the season, and Drayton happened to fall on that weekend.

There will be new rides as well this year, which will bring the count of the rides higher than it has been in the past, says Fulks. But this year, Fulks is excited to announce there will be a funnel cake and mini donut wagon at the fair.

Midway one of two major fundraisers

“Before they were kind of doing it out of one of the other units… but now it’s the real deal,” he says.

While the midway is an important fundraiser for the Lions Club, it doesn’t require much volunteer work from the club when it’s in town. Fulks says there will be Lions Club volunteers present to help with some things, but for the most part, they are there for promotion and to keep anything from getting out of hand.

“We won’t need any external volunteers for it,” says Fulks.

The wristbands will go on presale at Value Drug Mart starting on June 1 and will cost $35. Wristbands purchased at the gate will cost $40. However, there will also be individual tickets available to use on the rides.

“People don’t have to buy wristbands for ride-all-day. There are tickets available and each ride will cost a certain number of tickets,” he says.

The midway, along with the Horses and Hooch fundraiser and their annual concert at the car show are the Lions’ main fundraisers for the year.
