What is an AJHL team?
Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) hockey refers to the competitive Junior A ice hockey played by teams in Alberta, Canada, which serves as a key developmental league for players aspiring to play at the college, university, and professional levels, including the NHL. Players are typically 20 years of age or younger, and the league is a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL).
What can I expect at the arena? Is there food, snacks?
When you come into the newly named Team Auctions Centre you will be greeted by our wonderful ladies that help at our ticket desk as well as the entrance into Omni I which is now known as the Nelson Bros. Arena. The arena has a full concession in the Pembina Pipeline (Omni II) lobby. As well we have an additional smaller concession set up on game days on the northwest side of the arena (by the bar) which has drinks, bagged candy and popcorn for purchase.
How long does a game last?
An AJHL game usually takes approximately 2 ½ hours unless you go into overtime or shootout.
Should I bring a blanket? Is the arena cold?
If you would like to be cozy during the game you are more than welcome to bring a blanket. The arena can be chilly at times, but the Nelson Bros Arena has now been updated with timers on the walls that can now be turned on at any time to keep you warm. We want to make your time in the arena an enjoyable one while you watch the game.
Seasoned Fans
What can we expect from the team this year?
We are looking to take our game day to a new level of more crowd interactions, giveaways and to keep fans excited and engaged as they sit and enjoy the warm arena and fast high-energy paced games.
Are there any promotions/event days we can really look forward to?
We always look forward to our Hockey Hooky Day- this year Tuesday, December 9 at 12pm we will be going onto our fourth season where we invite schools from Drayton Valley as well as surrounding areas- Breton/Winfield/Warburg/home school etc. We always have a huge crowd of over 1,000 fans! This year we are excited to introduce RIGZ, our new mascot, to all the kids!
Another event we look forward to is our annual Stuff A Bus. That will happen this year between Dec 5 and Dec 6. At our home game Friday, Dec 5 vs Lloydminster Bobcats at 7pm we will start collecting items and then Saturday Dec 6 we will be set up with the bus at Walmart and Canadian Tire collecting gifts for Santas Anonymous and our local Food Bank.
Skate with the Thunder- we have two more skates with the Thunder booked. Sunday, Nov 23 following the game and Sunday, Feb 15 following the game. Both games start at 2pm.
