Town talks restrictions

There will be a restriction exemption program in place at some Town of Drayton Valley facilities, but a decision on what happens at Park Valley Pool and the Omniplex has been put off until next week.

The program means members of the public will  require proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result to use the facility, but allows operations to otherwise continue as normal.

At a special meeting on Wednesday afternoon town council voted to adopt the program at the MacKenzie Conference Centre and the Total Works Fitness Centre.

A report from administration looking at all Town facilities said that, “It is certain that in person attendance would be lower in many areas if Council chose to implement a Restrictions  Exemption Program, however some programs and services would have to be cancelled without a  Restrictions Exemption Program.”

Council had a lengthy discussion on the issue, particularly on the impact it would have on recreational users of the pool and the Omniplex. Councillor Corey Peebles said he believed that individual groups were able to adopt the restrictions themselves, and it was his preference for them to do so if they wished without the Town getting involved.

A call was made to Alberta Health Services to confirm if that was correct, but the information was not immediately available. Eventually that led to a decision to delay making a decision on the pool or the Omniplex until next week’s Governance and Priorities meeting.
