Town councillor Amila Gammana is running for a third term on October 20 with a focus on building a brighter future for all residents in the community.

“I chose Drayton Valley as my home 19 years ago, and since then, my family and I have been deeply involved in giving back to this incredible community,” said Gammana. “We’ve seen our community face many challenges, but we’ve always pulled together to rise above them. I want to continue working hard to ensure Drayton Valley thrives and that opportunities for growth and prosperity are available to everyone.”

Heading into the election, Gammana says if re-elected he will work toward several goals for the community.

These five different areas, which include stronger economy and diversification; healthy, safe, and inclusive community; support for local businesses and entrepreneurs; enhancing education and post-secondary opportunities; and improved inter-municipal relationships, all tie into different issues that Gammana says he has been focused on over the past several years.

Gammana is a business owner with a BSc in Information Technology and Cisco Certified Network Engineer credentials. He is also a former president of the Rotary Club, a director of the Chamber of Commerce, chair of the Pembina Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee, director of Drayton Valley Community Learning and a director of the Drayton Valley Multicultural Association.

“I believe in a Drayton Valley where local businesses are supported, our community is safe, inclusive, and healthy, and where we offer greater education and employment opportunities. We need to continue our efforts in diversifying the economy and improving our relationships with neighboring municipalities,” he said.

One initiative he has worked toward on council is the Zero Fee Education Program, which aims to attract students to the community and, from there, new industries and manufacturing to the area.

Gammana believes that the diversity in Drayton Valley is one of its advantages.

“Our strength is in our diversity. Together, we can build a more connected and resilient Drayton Valley,” he said.

He has championed this diversity through the Zero Fee Education Program, but also as a member of the Drayton Valley Multicultural Association, where he has welcomed many newcomers to the community.

Outside of Drayton Valley, Gammana has pushed for multiculturalism in the province, winning an award from the Alberta Diversity Magazine for his efforts in promoting multiculturalism in Alberta. He has also received a Certificate of Achievement from Historica Canada.

“I’m asking for your support once again to help me continue to represent you on town council. Together, we can keep moving Drayton Valley forward with optimism and opportunity for all,” he says.
